How to stay calm and minimize stress during your divorce

A woman is calm and controls her anger following a divorce

It’s fair to assume that you’re going to get upset, irritated, angry or flustered at some point during your divorce.

However, letting your emotions get the best of you can quickly become a problem as you draw up new battle lines and start spending greater emotional and financial costs on the way to a settlement.

Anger leads to regret

It might feel like a moment of blissful catharsis to spill all your anger at your ex, but when tempers have cooled down then you’ll be left with an even wider gap that will need to be crossed in order to reach a resolution.

Instead, vent your anger in a more controlled way, maybe by writing down your thoughts in a letter that will never be sent. Either that or take a deep breath or take a walk with the dog, anything to get your mind off the issue until you are ready to deal with it later in a more productive way.

Try to see the big picture

Focusing only on present anxieties and concerns can make you feel miserable. Instead, you can try to focus on your situation as a new opportunity. By taking a look at the larger picture, you can begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Be prepared to make necessary compromises

Refusing to budge an inch on any of your ex’s wishes is a sure way to escalate the tension. Regardless of your emotions, it’s important to flexible and open-minded so that have a collaborative, and not a combative divorce. Don’t see a divorce as a “win or lose” battle, but rather as a way for both parties to get a fair chance to start again.

Take care of yourself

Spend time with family and friends in a positive environment. It might be easy to let yourself fall into some bad habits as a way of coping, but the sooner you make a decision to keep moving forward, the sooner you can start enjoying life once again!
