Are all divorce lawyers the same, more or less?

Are all divorce lawyers the same?

It’s not every day that you need to hire a divorce lawyer.

Since it’s a very specialized service, it means that you might not be familiar with what to look for when you’re preparing for divorce, or if you’re looking for solid legal advice.

It’s important to take some time and carefully consider your options before choosing a legal team to work with. After all, there’s a lot at stake in a divorce and nobody wants to get the short end of the stick because they received bad advice.

Disorganized

If your lawyer doesn’t seem to be prepared for your first meeting, that’s a red flag. There are a lot of details that need to be taken care of in a divorce, so you’ll want to work with someone who is calm, professional and under control right from the start.

Poor Communication

Slow or no response to emails? Talking with a different person every time you reach out?

It might not be realistic to expect 24 hours, 7 days a week responses from your lawyer, but you should certainly aim to set clear expectations on communication. If you can’t get information to them reliably from the get-go then it is sure to remain a nuisance throughout the entire process.

Uncertain or inexperienced

An initial consultation is a great time to get a feel for how much confidence and experience a family lawyer has. While every case is different, they should be familiar with possible options and approaches. They should also be able to outline what you can expect and lay out a plan.

Unempathetic or dishonest

When someone says the name “lawyer” you probably get a fairly negative image in your head, but you don’t have to accept that all lawyers fit this stereotype.

With that in mind, if your lawyer seems disinterested in you, or working on your behalf, then you shouldn’t be surprised if they don’t do a good job of representing you. Likewise, if they seem prepared to use underhanded tactics to achieve their goals then you can probably assume that they treat most people the same way.

Personality Conflicts

Even if a lawyer is experienced, it can be possible that they simply aren’t a good fit. You will be working closely together with your lawyer and will need to be able to fully trust them, so you don’t want to have the chance of butting heads or having other personality-related challenges.
