Why it isn’t a good idea to hire a “pit bull” lawyer

In the middle of a divorce or separation, you may be tempted to pursue the services of a pit bull lawyer. It may be that friends suggest you find an aggressive lawyer who can go on the attack against your ex, or maybe it’s your cathartic reaction to the strong emotions that accompany a breakup.

Whatever the reason, there are more than a handful of concerns with hiring a pit bull lawyer that you should keep in mind when it comes time to book a legal consultation.

A longer trial = A larger bill

The first and perhaps most important reason to avoid a pit bull lawyer is a financial one. The more likely you are to get embroiled in arguments, especially petty ones, the more you can expect to pay on the final invoice.

It’s important that you team up with a lawyer who can recognize when you are not getting what you rightfully deserve, but having a lawyer who fights tooth and nail to “win” on every last detail will only work against you.

Emotional Stress

Having a lawyer who wants to start fights will make it even more difficult to get over your divorce or separation emotionally. Regardless of the circumstances under which the relationship ended, you will be feeling the emotional after-effects of a relationship that has soured.

Pouring fuel on the fire by hiring a pit bull lawyer removes any possible chance of reconciliation and makes it that much harder to move on.

May potentially damage your case

Aggressive personalities can quickly set a tone for your case and make you seem like the less reliable and reasonable party. The more willing your lawyer is to get on the warpath, the quicker the judge’s favour may turn away from your side.

Works against the legal system

More and more the legal system seeks to find peacefully, mediated resolutions whenever possible. In this new legal environment, pitbull lawyers stick out like dinosaurs.

Having a legal team that initiates fights and arguments can work against you if everyone else is trying to work together and find a level-headed solution.
